Celebrate Freedom, Liberty, and Independence

It's the fourth of July, and what a great opportunity to reflect on why we love our country.

America was founded on freedom. Freedom to worship as you choose, to seek your own fortune, to live your own life. Brave pilgrims and colonists came here looking for freedom. When they declared independence from England, they set up a government designed to defend that freedom. Thank God for those brave founders!

America was founded on hope. The people who came here on the Mayflower and other ships had to leave everything they had ever known in the world behind. Why would they do that? On the hope that the new world would be better. Americans are still like that -- risking everything to start a business, to try something new, or to serve their country. Only one thing can make those kind of risks make sense: A firm belief that by persistence, intelligence, and hard work we can make our great nation even better.

America was founded with recognition of our creator. When the founding fathers declared their independence from England, they did so with a specific acknowledgement that they were created, and that they were created to be free. The document the signing of which we celebrate today begins with an acknowledgement of God.

Let there be no doubt. We live in the greatest nation on earth. So let's celebrate and give thanks for it today! Have a happy Fourth of July.

Montana on the front lines of Obamacare resistance

After the Supreme Court's highly disappointing ruling that allowed Obamacare to remain in place, our country is down to its last hope to end this disasterous law. If we want to be free to make our own choices regarding paying for health care, there is only one route still available to us. We must win the presidency and we must win the Senate.

This article in National review makes that point very well.

Even a razor-thin majority in the Senate could be enough to repeal the worst parts of Obamacare. By means of a Senate rule known as "budget reconciliation," bills that pertain to the budget can be passed under rules that forbid the filibuster -- the Senate debate tactic that requires 60 votes to overcome. If the fillibuster is not allowed, then 50 votes plus one will be enough to repeal the individual mandate, and many other portions of Obamacare. This Politico article describes the reconcilliation strategy.

Currently Republicans hold 47 seats in the Senate. We need a net gain of 3 seats to get to 50. If we have 50 seats, then the Vice President can break tie votes. Since President Obama would surely veto the repeal of Obamacare, this plan is only likely to work if Mitt Romney is President, and of course with him would be a Republican Vice President. The Republican Vice President would mean that 50 Republican Senators is enough to repeal the individual mandate. We must win those three seats.

Winning those three seats in the Senate could easily come down to Montana. Denny Rehberg's race for the U.S. Senate is one of the most hotly contested in the country, and the most recent polling has Denny ahead, but only by two points.

On its own, Denny's victory would represent a net gain for Republicans of 1 seat -- 33 percent of what's needed to repeal Obamacare!

It's exciting that we here in Montana have the chance to be an indispensible part of saving America from Obamacare. But it also means a lot of responsibility. We are on the front lines of the last stand against forced purchase of health insurance. Our country needs us. It's time to step up.

Charges of MTGOP "displaying" an "Obama Outhouse" proven false

Posted in Blog - Blog

Over the weekend, an Associated Press headline falsely reported that the Montana Republican Party displayed an outhouse with various offensive statements about the President and his family.

Unlike the headline, the body of the story correctly reported that the display was placed there by parties unknown to us. The Party Chairman condemned that display the very moment he heard of it, and called on people to respect the President. The AP's own story correctly reported that the person responsible for the display could not be determined, and that the party chairman repudiated it.

Many news organizations falsely reported the headline "Montana GOP displays" when  the AP story actually reported that we did not display the outhouse, the person responsible for displaying it could not be determined, and it had been seen before at a function completely unconnected to the Montana GOP.

We have already begun discussions with the Associated Press about whether it's possible to correct this situation of misinformation.
